Protect Your Acre
Everyday, our actions put places like these in danger of being lost. Illegal animal trade, deforestation,
climate change, and habitat loss have pushed the extinction rate to 1000 times higher than its natural rate.
"Scientists now say we have entered the sixth
great extinction period in history. This time
there is no asteriod. This time, it's us."
Vice President Al Gore
There have been five periods of mass extinction in the history of the world. While the exact causes of each period are unknown, it is known that they were caused by natural events. Massive volcano eruptions, asteriods, ice ages are all likely candidates. This sixth event is not natural. This time, we are responsible. As our population exploded, technology improved, we destroyed the environment to suit our needs. We are now responsible for the greatest threat to our planet.
But there is a silver lining to all of this. We caused it, so we must fix it. But we can fix it. Waddlebird and Conservation International have developed a method to tackle this challenge. By protecting hotspots, or areas of dense life, we can be successful. Rainforests cover only 3% of our planets surface, but over half of its life. Over 750 million dollars has now been put toward this Conservation strateg. Conservation International estimates than an investment of $100 Billion will be needed to protect the hotspots around the world. The war in Iraq has used well over $200 Billion to date.
