Morelet's Tree Frog
Prince Charming
Range
Central America
Morelet’s Tree Frog is now one of the rarest frogs on Earth. It lives in Central America and into Southern Mexico. The frog used to be abundant, but is dying at a rapid rate now due to disease and deforestation. Chytridiomycosis, an infectious disease that kills amphibians, is destroying the population. Scientists project that over the next 10 years, 80% of the population will die from the disease. Due to this, the IUCN lists Morelet’s Tree Frog as Critically Endangered.
The frog is very colorful with a bright green skin pigment on its body and a light pink or red underside. Females leave eggs on rocks overlooking water. When the larvae hatch, they fall into the water allowing them to continue development.
