Leatherback Turtle
Spiny Shell
The largest of all sea turtles, the Leatherback Sea Turtle is a prime example of humans pushing a species to the brink of extinction. If the turtles survive the first years of life, they have nearly no natural predators. Pollution and fishing have significantly depleted the population. The Leatherback Turtle's diet consists mainly of Jellyfish. Plastic bags (look strikingly similar to Jellyfish) are often eaten by mistake and cause intestinal blockage and death.
It is now illegal to harm Leatherback Turtles in any way. There are many initatives for Leatherback Turtle conservation. "The Great Turtle Race" is an event hosted by Conservation International that promotes awareness and conservation of this magnificent species.
