Tasmanian Devil
Small but Strong
Tasmania
The Tasmanian Devil is the size of a small dog, but is able to kill prey up to the size of a kangaroo. Once common in Australia, the Tasmanian Devil's range has now been pushed to exclusively the island of Tasmania.
Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is now effectively destroying the population. Nearly half of the Devil's population has been infected and killed. DFTD is a cancer that can be transmitted. Transmittable cancers are very rare.
In May 2008, the species was declared endangered by the IUCN. There are now an estimated 25,000 Tasmanian Devils remaining in the wild.
