The Waddlebird Story
August 2008
Climate change and deforestation
were both terms we knew. When we
dug a little deeper to really understand
the situtation, we learned some pretty
shocking statistics and the Waddlebird
project began.
Due to deforestation and climate
change, the extinction rate is over
one thousand times its natural rate.
That is, one species goes extinct
every twenty minutes - 72 a day.
We decided that we wanted to get
involved and do our part.
next page
continuing our research, we learned
about a place in the middle of the
Pacific Ocean that is completely
man-made. This place, called the
Great Pacific Garbage Patch is
exactly what it sounds like – a
giant floating pile of human trash
that has formed an “island”
twice the size of Texas.
The Thinking Cap
The situation seemed dire, but we
were determined to help make a
change. A great solution seemed
to lie within our rain forests.
Deforestation accounts for more
carbon released into the atmosphere
than all cars, trucks, and planes
combined and has destroyed
millions of acres of habitat.
Working to stop deforestation has
a two pronged effect - saving the
species' habitats and slowing climate
change.
November 2008
Three months later, we managed to
get enough of our own money together
to order fifty shirts, half gray and half
blue. Not sure what to expect, we
started to sell them. Much to our
delight, they were a hit. People really
seemed to be getting behind the idea
and wearing the shirts regularly.
We ordered a few more batches of the
shirts and found that they were still
selling. Waddlebird was up and running.
Earth Day, 2009
Waddlebird hosted Menlo High
School's (Atherton, CA) Green Week,
culiminating on Earth Day, April 22.
A special edition shirt was sold for
the event and 100% of profit was
donated. Over one hundred students
participated in bike to school day and
we donated $2,000 to Conservation
International. Our efforts are equal to
saving roughly 133 acres of tropical
rainforest, with each acre providing
critical habitat for hundreds of species.
Our Tandem
Just days after we founded Waddlebird,
we came across an old tandem in our
shed. We decided to restore it and
rode the bike constantly.
We realized that riding the tandem
shared many characteristics
neccesary to solve the climate crisis
and protecting endangered species.
Sometimes, the end of the ride seemed
impossibly far away, but when we got
on the same page the gears slowly
turned and we made progress.
The Time is Now
We live in one of the most significant
periods of our planet's history. The
climate is in serious trouble and species
are going extinct at a thousand times
the natural rate.
We are passionate about species
conservation and stopping
deforestation because if we do not
make a change now, the consequences
will be permanent. The good news is
we make it easy for you to make a
difference. Waddlebird clothing not
only provides money for endangered
species, but just wearing your shirt
promotes awareness.
Going Places
Waddlebird has been all over the world. The Waddle Around the World contest is still going on now! Check out

A 24/7 Job
At the current extinction rate, over a
million more species will be extinct
by 2050. That is why this is not a
nine to five job - we are always
striving to learn more and grow.
We strongly believe that
stopping deforestation by providing
incentives to locals is a huge part
of the solution, but we are
always looking for other creative
options to contribute to slowing
species extinction.
Do Your Part
In a recent survey, 9 out of 10 people
claimed they have more fun while
wearing their Waddlebird shirt.
Thanks for your continued support.
Sincerely,
The Waddlebird Team
