Wandering Albatross
Southern Roamer
Range
25,000,000 mi2 in Southern Hemisphere
The Albatross is famous for its large range and ability to cover huge distances over water. The Wandering Albatross has the largest wingspan of any bird, allowing it to glide very efficiently.
Water pollution is the biggest threat to their survival. The population on South Georgia Island has been shrinking by 2% every year for some time now. The Wandering Albatross reproduces every two years, and a bird is not able to reproduce until they are at least 11 years old.
The species is conservation dependent and needs help. Preserves have been set up on many of the birds breeding grounds on the Prince Edward Islands, Macquarie Islands, Crozet Islands, and Kerguelen Islands.
