Bornean Orangutan
Solitary Genius
Range
Bornea (Southeast Asia)
The Bornean Orangutan lives in only one place in the world. Once flourshing, the species has been reduced to an estimate 42,500 individuals. Populating the Bornean tropics, the orangutan has been known to travel great distances to find fruit, rich soil, and bird eggs. Their habitat is being destroyed at a rapid rate and the bushmeat trade haspushed the Bornean Orangutan onto the endangered species list.
Males weigh around 200 pounds and live up to 40 years. Females weigh about half that and have a similar lifespan. The Bornean Orangutan is a very solitary creature, and is known to be very intelligent. They have been observed using sticks as spears for fishing.
