Black Stilt
Long Legs
Range
New Zealand
The Black Stilt has been a protected species with significant effort in conservation programs for over 25 years. Despite these efforts, the bird remains incredibly rare with extinction a very high possibility in the near future. The bird is the rarest wading bird (bird with long legs) in the world. There are only 22 Black Stilts remaining in the total population. In 1994, the population was 119. The population has been steadily declining and conservation programs are still not having any success.
Threats from new hydroelectric powerplants and from non-indigenous species have pushed this magnificent species to the brink of survival.
