Australian Sea Lion
From Down Under
Range
Southwestern Australia
The Australian Sea Lion is a type of sea lion that inhabits only the south and west coast of Australia. There are an estimated 10,000 members in the total population. The population plummeted when Europeans first came to Australia. Since the passing of the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Act in 1972, the number of Australian Sea Lions has increased steadily.
While somewhat awkward and slow on land, the Australian Sea Lion is graceful and fast in the water. They hunt exclusively in water for fish and squid.
