California Condor
Clean Up Crew
In 1987, eight California Condor's remained. All eight were captured and a breeding program was begun. A few years later, the birds were released, but the species is still extremely vulnerable. Rated as crticially endangered, the California Condor is far from in the clear. The population has increased every year since 1996, but the growth rate is slow.
The California Condor project is one of the most expensive ever, but one of the most successful as well. As of April 2009, there are 322 birds. The population has grown over 500%.
The California Condor is a key part of the ecosystem and plays a large role in cleaning carrion. Help protect this amazing species today.
