Bison
An American Pastime
The Bison was hunted to near extinction in the 19th century, but the population has grown since then due to many conservation programs. However, the IUCN still lists the Bison as Near Threatened as over 95% of American Bison are controlled for commercial use. Bison are hunted year round in Northern America.
The Bison is a great story - a species able to return from the brink of extinction. But the American Bison is undoubtedly still a conservation dependent species - it still needs help.
Standing up to six and a half feet tall, ten feet long, and weighing upwards of a ton, the Bison is a vital part of the ecosystem.
