Subantartic Fur Seal
Population Regrowth
Range
Antarctica and surronding islands
The Subantartic Fur Seals population is on the rise thanks to the Convention for the Conservation of Antartic Seals. Once hunted to a vulnerable state, the population is rapidly recovering. The current number in the population is estimated at 300,000. Extinction is very unlikely for this species thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
The Subantartic Fur Seals are distinctive for their yellow underbellies. Fur Seals from further north have a brown underbelly. Males weigh upwards of 350 pounds and live for roughly 25 years.
